"The Minnesota Portraits and other music by Carl Schroeder" features new instrumental music for orchestra, concert band and chamber ensembles by 24-year-old Minnesota composer Carl Schroeder.

Schroeder's music, which has been described as "searingly beautiful" (Minneapolis Star Tribune) often connects with American history while also drawing inspiration from everyday life and surroundings. Musical influences include Aaron Copland, Danny Elfman, Philip Sparke, Eric Whitacre and John Williams.

The CD includes premiere recordings of "The Minnesota Portraits," a concert band suite based on the composer's impressions of various Minnesota landmarks, "Christine's Lullaby: An Elegy for Orchestra," written in honor of Christine Lee Hanson, the youngest victim of the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, the jazz quartet "Core Event," three solo piano works performed by the composer and other works.

Several Minnesota ensembles and soloists perform on the CD, including the internationally-acclaimed St. Olaf Band and St. Olaf Orchestra, the Minnesota Symphonic Winds and percussionist Dave Hagedorn, a Yamaha Performing Artist.
